Memories of ice skating and playing hockey on the ice lingers in the minds of many Canadian's as hot summers morph into long, cold winters and then repeat year after year. Frozen lakes, ponds, canals, puddles and swamps soon become speckled with both young and old alike, all reaping the slippery rewards left by nature.

Georgian Bay Region - Ontario, Canada
Welcome to the wide open waters of Georgian Bay which lies east of the Bruce Peninsula and south of Manitoulin Island on one of North America's five Great Lakes know as Lake Huron. Experience the ulitmate in boating from sailing to powerboats, secluded camping or luxury living, there is something for everyone!
Georgian Bay is surrounded by towns and areas such as Wasage Beach, Collingwood, Honey Harbour, Manitoulin Islands, Sudbury, Parry Sound, Muskoka, Simcoe, Grey and Bruce County regions. The shores and waterways of the Georgian Bay area belong to the Anishinaabeg First Nations peoples to the North and Huron-Petun (Wyandot) to the south. The bay was thus a major Algonquian-Huron trade route. Samuel de Champlain, the first European to explore and map the area in 1615-1616 later named Georgian Bay.
The main body of Georgian Bay is approx. 320 kilometres (200 miles) long by 80 kilometres (50 miles) wide covering over 15,000 square kilometres (5800 square miles). There are literally thousands of islands along with Manitoulin Island which is the largest island in a freshwater lake. Georgian Bay is located at the most southern edge of the Canadian Shield with granite bedrock exposed by the glaciers from the last ice age around 11,000 years ago. These granite rock formations are formed along most of the shoreline and continue to inspire artists to create their own beautiful depictions such as the infamous Group of Seven.
The towns of Midland, Penetanguishene, Collingwood, Meaford and Wasaga Beach are located at the southern end of the bay. While Owen Sound and Wiarton are located on the Bruce Peninsula along the southern and southwestern shore of the bay. Tobermory is located at the northern tip of the Bruce Peninsula on the Main Channel. The passenger ferry MS Chi-Cheemaun travels from Tobermory, across the Main Channel to South Baymouth on Manitoulin Island. Parry Sound is the world's deepest freshwater port located on the eastern shore of the bay and Wasaga Beach located on the south shore has 14 km's (8.7 miles) of gorgeous white sandy beaches.
