Hello to all my visitors :)

I'm so glad you that you stopped by for a visit and I'm also sorry to tell you that I'm no longer posting on this blog...see I don't live in Ontario anymore and due to this blogs 'location oriented' feel, I just can't get it into it.

Please feel free to check what I have posted as there are some great pics and lots of useful and intersting information. Some of it is 'time stamped' (such as events) so be sure not head out without looking at the dates first.

Golden, B.C. Kicking Horse River

I camped here for two weekends in a row this past summer, even played 'hookie' so I could stay one more night! Super location, right within the town of Golden. This river is glacier fed and very, very cold but if you are brave and it's B.C. hot, you are gonna wanna at least get your feet wet. Don't forget your camera as you may see majestic Big Horn Sheep scaling the rocks and your bug spray or you'll end up as dinner for many.

Salvia divinorum... it's psychoactive, legal & in Ontario!

Salvia divinorum is a new term that is now in my vocabulary, have you heard of it before or maybe Seer's Sage? Apparently, teens, young adults and a few hippies have picked up a few bits of history that intrique them but sadly, they're not reading about they're smoking it! Why? Well, to get higher than a kite silly. The 'tradition' dates back centuries from the far regions of Mexico and South America and is also completely legal!

Rather than duplicating an article I've already published, here's the link... What wrinkles? ...the nose on my face as I see young adults smoking Salvia Divinorum!?! As parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents, teachers, leaders...we ought to know about it too, don't you think?

Here in Ontario, from the week beginning July 3rd until the July 11th, every fishable water source within the province can be fished without you requiring a government issued fishing license.
We boost about some pretty amazing fishing right here in cottage country so, I hope you have your angling gear in check and at the ready? Pretty Peonies are the perfect Cottage Flower

In late spring to early summer the gardens in cottage country are decorated with gorgeous Peonies that range in color from snow white up to vibrant, lush pinks and rich, velvet crimsons. These gorgeous flowers have such a stunning fragrance too, that they easily fill a room with scent...and ants, if you forget to shake em' before bringing them indoors ;)

Peonies require little to no maintenance and seem to be the perfect perennial! Just secure with string or a cage (so they don't sag from the weight of the blooms) and they Peony do prefer lots of sun. But, I've planted some groupings in dappled shade and although they are slower to expand they seem very happy and their blooms tend to last longer.

Host a Pig Roast at the Cottage!

Every year hundreds of outdoor gatherings are hosted in cottage country and if you're lucky, you'll attend at least one mouth watering Pig Roast, Pig Pickin's, Luau or Redneck BBQ every year! They make the perfect party food for large gatherings with relaxed atmospheres and there's plenty of that going on in this four season paradise.

Pig roasts occur internationally, from Cuba to China, on New Year's Eve or Christmas, at Stag n' Does, Jack n' Jill's, family reunions or country wide celebrations like Canada day (which is coming up July 1st, 2010)...

Pig Roast Cooking Process...

Pigs are usually seasoned then roasted on either a rotating spit , the BBQ, charcoal grill, an open fire, a large oven or buried in hole then covered in hot lava rocks.

It takes anywhere from 4 to 24 hours to cook either a half or whole pig. It's also best to cook it meat side down flipping only once when fat has stopped dripping. When the cooking process is complete, the meat should be tender enough that it easily falls off the bone. The meat is then either chopped or pulled or is picked off the roasted pig by the guests.

Popular spices, seasonings and flavours include crushed garlic, black pepper, salt, oregano, olive oil, wine vinegar, BBQ sauce, mesquite or smoked flavours.

This # of people = approx. this much Pig (in lbs.)

- 20 people = 40lb pig
- 40 people = 50lb pig
- 80 people = 90lb pig
- 120 people = 120lb pig

You will need...

- Pig
- BBQ sauces, seasonings, spices, brine, marinade or get your piglet pre-smoked!
- Meat thermometer
- Heat Gloves
- Sharp knife
- Pig Serving Tray (a large table strictly for the pig is perfect)
- Heat source ie; BBQ, spit, grill, fire pit or hole
- Fuel ie; charcoal, propane, wood or lava rocks
- Time and planning. Rushing leads to a burnt piggie, start too late and you guests may be eating at 2am!

Determine how you will be serving your roasted pig...

Will it be carved into rough slices, taken off in rough chunks, or pulled and picked off by the guests?
Will it be served with green salad, Caesar, potato, bean or pasta salad?
Will it be accompanied by buns, rolls, sliced bread, baguettes or french bread?
Will your beverage be iced tea, colas, ice cold beer & cider or Dandelion Wine?

p.s. If your guests begin to resemble any of these three characters, perhaps the Dandelion wine has already kicked in!

p.s.s. I experienced a blonde moment when I hosted my first pig roast (without being to one first)...I was expecting a smoked ham taste throughout the meat and instead got plain white pork, duh! So, for future reference I made note to either purchase a pre-seasoned/pre-smoked piggie or to have plenty of condiments at the ready ;)

Stephen B. Leacock Museum - Orillia & Lake Couchiching - History

The Stephen Leacock Museum or the Stephen Leacock Memorial Home is a huge part of Orillia's literary history and has been situated on the shores of Lake Couchiching since 1928. The Leacock House, as it was known then, was built just minutes from the Port of Orillia on Old Brewery Bay and is open for viewing.

Stephen B. Leacock (1869 - 1944) was known worldwide for his profound knowledge, sense of humour and talent for writing; publishing books such as Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town and Nonsense Novels. The highly awarded author, economist and poli-sci fanatic led a very interesting, well rounded life and we are proud have his roots right here in cottage country. As well, the nearby shores of Lake Simcoe was home to Stephen Leacock and his family when he was a much younger lad, and is where he chose as his final resting place.

Are we anticipating a relaxing weekend in cottage country despite the fact our 'area' is crawling with an additional 5,000+ gun wielding tourists for this year's G8 Summit? ...same situation a couple of hours south in downtown Toronto, another 15,000+ for the G20 Summit!!?

One ought to feel safe with all of the security nearby yet it's probably the least safe I've felt since the morning of 9/11! With worldwide attention being focused on our once quiet and serene 'neighbourhood' we truly do lay helpless in the wake of whatever bad things 'they' anticipate happening. Oh well, I guess it's out of my control but fingers are certainly crossed!

All road closures will be in affect as of tomorrow (Wednesday) with many restrictions already in place throughout both areas. No ID and/or special pass = no enter! Pink, orange, blue and green roads all have restrictions and you are required to have a level of authority or 'right to be there' on all of them. The green roads will be used for those passing through the area and do expect delays and/or detours and/or road checks!

While on a quick tour, this past weekend in cottage country, I came across these adorable baby raccoons while they were en route to an animal shelter. Seeing wildlife in Ontario is quite common yet they're not generally inside a cardboard box ;) ...so, of course I had to see what I was hearing and holly crap these darling little raccoons were so cute, cuddly and hungry! No doubt these 'coon cubs (kits) were also missing their Momma who was most likely killed on the highway ;(

Lake Simcoe & Kempenfelt Bay is the backdrop to Barrie's 6th annual Waterfront Festival this weekend!

The weather is supposed to hold up as...'gorgeous' in all of cottage country Ontario! and for the whole weekend too! How would you like to stroll along the sandy shoreline of Lake Simcoe while doing some shopping, eating and people watching or take a swim, a carnival ride or play a game of chance? You're thinking it about it aren't you? When was the last time you had a corn dog on the beach?

The 6th annual Barrie Waterfront Festival is held in the downtown area on Kempenfelt Bay and is great for all ages. There's lots of parking, just pack your beach stuff, sunscreen, water and wallet etc ;) then head out to the blue skies and blue waters of Heritage Park. There will be lots of live entertainment, a B101 & FM93 stage, midway, buskers and street vendors galore!

Festivities kick off at noon on Saturday, May 29th and continue until 11:00pm. On Sunday, the events start off at noon and wrap up at 6:00pm.

At last year's festival we chowed down on the best Poutine ever (twice), lost money on the games, did get a bit of a sunburn, bought some trinkets and we all loved it especially the kids! Everything at the park is somewhat contained yet you're outside so it's spacious, it's also busy yet fun and if we get a chance to go this weekend we'll make a day of it.

I wouldn't suggest you grab the first wheelchair in an online classified/auction site or garage sale though because, wheelchairs and other motorized transportation equipment have safety standards to adhere too. Ticks in Ontario?! ...ewww,!!

The thought of Ticks hanging latching onto me via their head and gorging on my blood is so gross that I'm finding it hard to do research on this topic! However, that's also exactly why I must let you know there are Ticks in Ontario and you, your pets and livestock could be affected.

Now, don't panic it's not like they're readily flying around the earth, in fact they don't even fly ;) They simply hang out on the tips vegetation like long grasses, bushes and leaves then move onto the 'host' as you walk by and brush up against their immediate area. Once on you they'll poke around to find the best spot to live then bam they'll bury their head inside the soft flesh!

I can't be 100% positive but I'm pretty sure our cat Spooky had a Tick embedded into his body which is why this whole topic surfaced. It looked like a huge pimple ready to pop! After doing some research regarding bugs and pets I came across this picture from the U of N ...and I think it looks just like 'it', eewww, gross!

We removed 'it' from Spooky and a small, circular mark was left behind. The mark is healing nicely (with no other signs or symptoms) but where the heck did it come from? We have untouched bush nearby with plenty of deer and cattle so I guess 'it' is from there? But, I thought Ticks were in the more southern or northern regions. My family has lived in cottage country for decades and have never come across them before, perhaps they are closing in?!.

How to avoid Ticks...

- Stay on the trails and when bushwacking keep bare skin covered with long pants, shirts and socks tucked in wherever possible. Ticks need to attach themselves to the skin in order to feed.

- Use an insect/tick bug repellent that contains DEET on yourself and put a tick and flea collar on your pets. Be sure to check yourself and them periodically once indoors. Ticks love fur, hair, groins, armpits, dark moist areas and the scalp!

I found a Tick!...

- immediate removal helps prevent infection (it generally takes about 24hrs. to transmit Lyme Disease).

- use tweezers to pull the Tick straight out (don't squeeze it's head off leaving it inside, this could lead to infection). Do not squeeze the area or the Tick! Once removed be sure to clean the immediate area with soap, water and rubbing alcohol.

- save the Tick and take it to your doctor who can then test it for Lyme Disease etc. (unfortunately, we flushed our cat's little friend without realising we should've taken it to the vet).

Mother nature blessed cottage country Ontario over the past May 24, 2010 long weekend with amazing weather...sunny, hot & dry! Many popular beach areas like Wasaga Beach, Barrie's downtown waterfront on Simcoe and Orillia's beaches on Lake Couchiching were a buzz with both pale and burnt people of all ages.

With record breaking, humid temperatures in the 30's it seems as though you're doing (or hoping to do) one of three things either escape into the water, find refuge in the shade or hide indoors with the a/c.

We don't have air conditioning at home nor are we lakeside so shade is where it's at and with this humidity my hair goes poof, thankfully I'm not made of sugar or I'd melt! ...far from the days of intentionally baking myself on the beach.

Lake Dalrymple, Ontario sunset, fire pit and home of the instant S'moresfest! Giant marshmallows, milk chocolate and graham squares. I love the later two but those big, gummy white blobs don't do it for me ;) ...there were fireworks too but, those pics didn't work out. Hope you had a safe and happy long weekend and cheers to the next one in July!!

For those who've made tracks up to the cottage or you live in cottage country all year long the Victoria Day May 24 weekend is always charged with excitement. I was hoping to find quite a few fireworks venues for you to consider but have only managed to turn up a couple of ideas.

With both weather and budget being a factor to having a successful event perhaps not many wish to take on the task. So, you could attend one of the following events or buy your own fireworks and have a display of your own!

Black Bears in Cottage Country! Prepare yourself with Bear Safety...

Black bears have awoken from their winter slumber and they're both hungry, extremely cranky and on the move! So, despite how cute and cuddly they appear to be, under no circumstances is it okay to approach nor encourage them...Imagine yourself sleeping in some dark hole for months on end without eating, how would you feel when you woke up? ;)

There have been numerous Black Bears sightings in Ramara, Severn, Tay, Tiny and the Lake of Bays townships along with a recent attack in Coldwater, Ontario!

Some residents who have lived in these areas for decades report having seen Black Bears for the first time this season. Yesterday, a Black bear took a stroll across the golf course at Taboo Resort in Gravenhurst and people were on the green golfing x#yards away!!

Summary of Bear Safety Tips...

- Keep your household waste, garbage and compost in sealed receptacles or containers designed for the job. Plastic bags are not considered a sufficient barrier where animals are concerned.

- Bird seed, suet and nectar left out for the birds will also attract the Bears.

- BBQ's, Hibachi and any outdoor cooking surface needs to be cleaned after each use. The remaining tidbits of food and grease left in the trap rings the dinner bell.

- Try to remain in a group and on the trails when you're outside hiking. A large, loud group is far less appealing to a hungry Bear than a single person strolling with a chicken wing!

- Fast moving waters make it difficult to hear a bear and for it to hear you as well, if it's a windy day the may not smell you until it's in front of you!

- Avoid or leave trails that broach on a bears food supply such as berries, dead animals or fish along the shorelines.

- Stay in wide open areas and be on alert for bear tracks, droppings, shredded logs and scratched tree trunks which indicate they are in the area.

- Keep your dog on a leash because they may just run back to you when being chased by a bear!

- Never allow young children to wander off ahead of the pack or stray behind nor leave them unattended.

- When you see cute Bear cubs romping around that means their protective Momma is nearby. She will stop at absolutely nothing to protect her young so please don't assume otherwise.

- Make noise while you're on the trails and in while tromping through bushes and forest areas. Bears don't want to make your acquaintance so, let them know you're coming!

How to Survive a Bear Attack...

...is the Snow Bunting lost or hanging out in Cottage Country for kicks?

It's not snowing in cottage country anymore but one feathered friend, known as the Snow Bunting, doesn't seem to know that. The pretty white bird landed in our yard a couple of weeks ago when the temperatures were hovering around zero plus it was very wet and windy. I guess he must like it here though because he hasn't left, yet.

The stark white feathers of the Snow Bunting stood out against the bright green grass and actually, the poor little birdie looked downright uncomfortable. He was bouncing around all nervous like maybe looking for a... polar bear? I've lived in Ontario's cottage country for almost 12 years but I've never seen a Snow Bunting before, I wonder if he's seen a cat before?

Generally, Snow Buntings nest in the north arctic regions where there's plenty of snow and frozen tundra and they only come down to the southern regions of Canada for warmth...lol, imagine coming to Canada for warmth in the winter!? I'll keep my eyes open for the female version, assuming we've got the male version with the extra pretty plumage.

I'm sure those residing in cottage country can judge by the recent weather that all fire bans within the central Ontario area have been lifted. So, feel free to responsibly torch away! For those coming up, over or down to this little piece of paradise you've now been enlightened ;)

Firewood will be wet, if it was left uncovered, which is when people tend to get creative with their fire starting skills. What ever do I mean? Well my friend, I'm talking about gasoline or any flammable product. It's dangerous, so please don't do it, talk your buddies out of it too! With the winds kicking up the way they do makes this form of entertainment/firestarting doubly dangerous!!

...and for each and every person that touches the ground when they walk (not just visitors), please don't forget to take your garbage with when you leave paradise! Stashing your junk on some sideroad doesn't count either!! I know garbage is gross and it's much easier to leave it for someone else but seriously, tsk tsk... Yes, I understand there aren't always garbage receptacles nearby so bring an extra bag already, it's not rocket science. Smokers too, just because ciggie butts are small doesn't mean it's okay. I'm not one to scold (well, yes I am ;) but I'm just trying to make a point.

Summer Road Construction 2010 - Hwy 12. North of Gamebridge to Atherly

I'm a summer girl so living in cottage country right near Lake Simcoe is fantastic. No running the roads unless I'm headed over to Wasaga Beach on Georgian Bay! However, thousands and thousands of cars travel both north and south daily during the summertime. From the GTA right up to Huntsville. It's those drivers who may want to consider an alternate route at least for the time being or at least just be aware there could be delays.

One of the newest highway construction projects currently underway for summer 2010 involves the Highway 12 Rehabilitation Project (repaving) which extends from Gamebridge to Atherly. Ramara township website will be posting notices and closures when necessary. As well, the Ministry of Transportation has information on all current and future road and highway projects if you have a completely different route.

As many are aware Highway 12 handles single lane traffic both ways so, for those travelling north or south getting onto Highway 169 or another sideroad will shorten your actual contact with that particular stretch of highway. Try to avoid some drastic, never before taken or seen on a map shortcut ;)

Skip the Room Service & go Camping at Awenda one of Ontario's Provincial Parks

I love to get outdoors and go camping with family and friends. There's something about transporting tonnes of gear to the boonies just to enjoy fresh air and a roaring campfire that makes me smile! Depending on who's included, a camping excursion could range from roughing it with no amenties to deluxe with bathrooms and power. For the most part I prefer to rough it yet with little kids in tow this isn't the easiest task nor always the sanest option ;)

When our kids were younger we made a point of taking one whole summer to visit all of the provincial campgrounds within a two hour radius. We had such an amazing summer with a few camping mini drama's on the side but that's par for the course anytime one attempts to escape 'reality'.

If you haven't already discovered Ontario Provincial Parks has a website where you can view every campground within the province. You can then make online reservations in advance which is incredibly helpful. It's easy to do and sometimes the only chance you may have of securing a spot! Check out the birds eye view of each campground ie; the washrooms, playgrounds, water, garbage, firewood, parking, beaches etc. then pick your ideal spot according to your needs.

The first camping spot we chose was Awenda Provincial Park located in Pentetanguishene, Ontario. With camping gear in check we headed off to nature's paradise... the shores of Georgian Bay overlooking the island known as Giant's Tomb!

Awenda was beautiful and I felt as though I had been transported back to British Columbia (where I'm from). The forest cover was incredibly lush, thick and green and the hills well, that leads me to a little story FYI...

Once settled we figured we'd head down to the water and be back up by dark. So, off we went and went ...it was the longest 'shortcut' we'd been on in awhile, or so we thought ;) Georgian Bay was stunning and the beach was perfect as you can see below our feet. But, downhill there means up hill to get back! Only this time we took the road...the second longest 'shortcut'! ...about 2 hours later we finally reached our campsite, the kids went to bed without a second thought and we hit the cooler for bevies and munchies. That's when we discovered our gigantic bag of M&M's (cracked open earlier and not put away) was now empty and jammed in to the bushes. Hmm, sneaky racoons! Beside's a few silly oversights on our part Awenda was a gorgeous place to camp and I'd recommend it to all nature lovers.

General camping tips...

- Read the map (more accurately than we did ;) or take the car first!
- Do bring enough water to accommodate little 'shortcuts'
- Don't leave food out for the critters, oops!
- Dress appropriately, it can get cool once the sun drops.

While camping at Awenda we did find Poison Ivy within the dry, grassy sand dune areas down at the beach. Stay on the trails or on the sand, don't wander into the bushes or off the beaten path.

As I look outside at my freckled lawn masses of Dandelions wink back at me snickering their heads off! ...and next it will be their offspring!!

What shall we do with all of these Dandelions that our 'green' society won't allow us to poison; must we must make like Marie Antoinette and cut off their heads?... or shall we harvest them!?

For the creative types a natural, dark red dye can be obtained from the root or for the hungry thirsty type you can make n' partake in Dandelion salad chased by some alcoholic Dandelion wine! Dandelions have health benefits too and are used in herbal teas both for pleasure and as a medicinal agent or tonic. Even the milky sap is used as a wart removal method. Who'd have thought such a bounty existed at our doorstep ;)

Dandelion Salad Recipe

- Tear 1 cup young dandelion greens into bite sized pieces then eat!

Upon trying a leaf, I recommend trying the other option below and to top it with a generous portion of creamy garlic dressing and crispy bacon bits!

Deluxe Dandelion Salad Recipe

- 4 cups young Dandelion greens
- 2 cups fresh Spinach
- 1/2 cup Alfalfa Sprouts
- 1/2 Red Onion, thinly chopped in rings or half slices
- 1/4 cup fresh Parsley
- 2 chopped, ripened Tomatoes
- 1/2 tsp. fresh or dried Basil
- 1/4 cup Dandelion petals (sprinkle atop the salad as a finishing garnish)
- Bacon bits

Or...

You could kick the healthy salad and whoop up a party! Those Dandelion heads you wanna hack off make fine Dandelion Wine and for that you'll need these recipes and a party theme such as a Pig Roast BBQ. You'll also require loads of Dandelion flower heads with equal amounts of boiling water and sugar combined with lemons and oranges. Readily available ingredients and a fairly simple process makes this the option seem somewhat appealing, if only I liked wine!

I'm thinking your family will either love these creative approaches or they'll appreciate why 'they' need to cut the grass ;) ...my version of reverse psychology.

Tips...

- Do make sure young kids know and understand it's not safe to eat all flowers!
- Do use unfertilized Dandelions
- Do use the smaller, younger greens rather than older, large ones
- Do wash the greens thoroughly
- Do choose greens from a pet free zone (we don't want to taste their dislike of Dandelions)
- Do pick your greens (Dandelions, not your nose) before the flower blooms to lessen the bitterness

I love to have a roaring fire outside, at any time of the year. Like right now for example, when the air is still chilly and dried leaves, sticks and remnants from the past winter still remain piled high longing to be charcoal. But alas, there's a fire ban in effect within both Ramara and Severn townships... :( so no fires for this girl, yet!

If you're a firebug like me, be sure to check with your local township office before torching your pile of dried wood, leaves, grass, brush, paper, cardboard or whatever it may be you want to burn. Please no garbage, plastic, tires ect. Buy a dump pass already, don't be so cheap!! It also doesn't matter whether your fire is contained to a barrel or firepit nor that you're hidden out of sight, no fires means no fires.

So, before you set torch to something, check first!

Lake Simcoe Smelt Fishing Update 2010!

This may not surprise you but...

...we (he) hasn't found any Smelts as of yet! A rumour circulated that the Smelts were in about 25 minutes away from our shoreline, but once we arrived there were no fish nor any sign of fish. However, we do believe 'the source' so, perhaps we just missed them...again!

My hubby is still perusing the shorelines but his hope is waning with each passing night ;) awww, such a diehard.

Gobble, gobble to turkey hunters and tree huggers...

Turkey season in cottage country Ontario opened this morning. Meaning, as a recreational user of Ontario's forests, you now need to take precautions to ensure your safety amongst the safety of everyone you are with. Whether toting the shotgun and hiding in the bushes with a turkey call in your mouth or strolling through the woods with a picnic basket, safety is the most important key!

Hunters...

- treat your weapon (shotgun, rifle or bow) with respect and always behave as though your weapon is loaded and ready to shoot. Do not get careless or lazy.

- never point your weapon at anyone, period! Point your weapon safely towards the ground unless shooting at your safe and visible target. Keep your target in front of you and pay attention to what is behind your target.

- always keep your safety on until just prior to taking your shot. The safety is located close to the trigger for a reason!

- clearly identify your chosen target before taking your shot! Be absolutely positive, then shoot.

- do not let your emotions get the better of you, use your best judgement at all times.

- do not climb in, out, over or under things with a loaded weapon. Wait until you are at your desired location to load your weapon.

- you must know and understand the range of your weapon, how many shots can be held in your chamber and how many shots remain in your chamber.

- be sure your weapon is well maintained and clean regularily. It must be in excellent, working order!

- wear your blaze orange vests, hats, coats and whatever else it takes to be seen and not shot ;)

- shooting commences 1/2 hour before sunrise til' 1/2 hour after sunset. No hunting on Sundays.

Hikers...

- try NOT to blend into the surroundings during hunting season. All ages must wear bright colours such as blaze orange, bright pink, yellow or fluorescent. Don't wear a feather cap nor a fur coat and I'd stay away from white, neutral or natural colours like brown, tan, khaki. It's not the time to consider fashion, it's all about function!

- keep your pets on a leash at all times and put a fluorescent collar and/or bright clothing on them too. An old t-shirt will suffice or get one specifically for dogs at a hunting/outdoor supply store.

- pay attention to your surroundings, listen and watch... all while staying on the marked trails!

- do not hike alone, the buddy system is still best (just like old skool).

Hikers & Hunters...

Although I'm more the tree hugger type I do understand a hunters need to hunt...just please be careful ;) we nature lovers do trust that you will not shoot your weapon until you are absolutely 100% positive of your target yet, accidents still happen every year! Let's all act responsibly to ensure our forests remain a safe haven for everyone who wants to get outdoors for whatever reason!

Cottage country Ontario and the common Black Fly!! Folksinger; Wade Hemsworth - Blackfly Song

A trip to cottage country means you're not just visiting with family and friends, you're also hobknobbing with the areas most peskiest of bugs... the Blackfly!

Blackflies are a common nuisance in the spring and although very small (approx. 1-5 mm) they pack quite the whollop when they bite. They don't seem to sting it's moreso what they leave behind. Once the Blackfly is finished eating the area can become very itchy. Once you itch it, even just once, they swell and can be unbearable, itch wise and could get infected! Blackflies aren't always black either, some are yellowish, orange, brownish grey or just grey. Tip: If it's a bug and it lands on you, kill it!

Female Blackflies survive on both nectar and the blood from humans and animals like dogs, cats, and livestock etc. which provides sustanence to her eggs while male Blackflies feed mainly on plant nectars, awww... Why is that female's are so vicious? ;)

The breeding and sustainability of the common Blackfly relies on a food source but more importantly, they require running water to lay their eggs. A constant stream of fresh running water such as rivers, streams and creeks are plentiful in cottage country, hence it's the perfect habitat for the Blackfly!

Apparently, DEET attracts the pests (I can't remember where I read that). Other than being fully shrouded in netting, nothing fends them off, period! So, simply cover your entire body when outdoors, lol! Around the hairline, scalp and behind the ears are very common places to be bitten, hence the super sexy head nets you see some people wearing.

The 'Black Fly', in general, has been responsible for spreading funky diseases in Africa and Central America along with slaughtering livestock in northern Alberta back in the 70's. Within Canada, there's barely 200 species out of a possible 1800 'ish' and if you've ever been dined upon by these little buggers, you'll understand this is a reason to celebrate!!... and be greatful we're not in northern Ontario (see video below)!

It's Garage Sale Season in Cottage Country - Do's & Don'ts for Sellers!

Garage Sale Do's...

- Do check your local bylaws to ensure you are able to have garage sales, how many, how large they can be, if parking will be an issue or holidays, rules on signage, if there's a license required or fees to pay.

- Do prepare in your sale in advance. Involve the neighbours or the whole street. Split costs for items you can share such as signage, tape, bags, advertising or the coffee / lemonade stand.

- Do stock pile your items in one area, at anytime of year! Seasonal changes often require moving things around. If you're not going to use it again, store it in the garage sale pile.

- Do cover and protect clothing, glassware, china, trinkets, electronics etc. as you collect them. Dusty, dirty, smelly items won't fly off the tables.

- Do keep boxes, containers, baskets, cabinets, dressers, desks, tables, shelves and trunks to sell and aide in selling. You need surfaces to display and group like items.

- Do be prepared with tarps so you can protect your items from natural elements such as rain and winds.

- Do put prices on all of your items in advance, right on the top! Painters tape removes easily and you can write on it with permanent marker. Realize that of course you may need to be flexible with bargain hunters. Grouped items can be marked with one sign ie; books 4 for a $1, fill a bag for $5.

- Do place larger tages on larger items such as furniture or electronics. Attach a piece of paper with point form write up's explaining more details such as age, useage, works or doesn't work, flaws and price etc. Unless you like to repeat, repeat, repeat...

- Do hang clothes on metal hangers and include them with the sale and/or fold nicely and place on a table.

- Do have lots of bags for putting sold items into along with tissue or newspaper to wrap fragile items.

- Do advertise in your local paper, online or post on a local bulletin board usually found at the library, post office, town hall, township office, church, grocery stores and/or arena.

- Do make sure you have a large enough cash float. Have lots of change, five and ten dollar bills along with the ability to break bigger ones if necessary. Do not use a cash box that sits alone, it's best to use one of those uuuggly fanny packs.

- Do have an extension cord available to turn on and test items for potential buyers.

- Do create proper, readable signage with directional arrows and large, bold lettering. Keep it simple with the date, time and location. Attach a wooden stake to water resistant sign board or plywood. Do not staple to trees or hydro poles of any kind, it's dangerous to workers and harmful to the trees!

- Do put up your signs up the night before your garage sale or very early the morning of the garage sale. Be sure to check the instructions yourself to make sure they are legible and correct.

- Do consider not having a garage sale and donating your quality items to charity :o) Blankets, quilts, sheets and towels are used up daily at local animal shelters. Clothing, household or decorative items and toys are if use to your local Salvation Army, senior's centre, women's shelter or community centre.

Garage Sale Don'ts...

- Don't sell it if it doesn't belong to you!

- Don't have a garage sale every weekend, it's not fun for those living around you having to share in the increased noise and traffic while you profit.

- Don't leave your garage sale signs up, remove them once the sale is over.

- Don't try to retire by charging too much. A bag of shells may represent a $3000 vacay to you but to a kid, they're just shells.

- Don't use paper signs, they're not big enough and tear easily.

- Don't use a ball point pen to chicken scratch a sign, use permanent felt tipped marker.

- Don't offend or bore potential buyers with your opinions, stories or comments. Just smile and be available.

- Don't hover and engage in alot of unnecessary small talk unless they approach you.

- Don't shoot the early birds, just warn them with a sign ;)... Early Birds will be Shot!

- Don't leave your yard a mess. Holes, mislaid toys & rakes does not a happy buyer make!

- Don't allow your dog/s to mingle with the buyers. Keep them, their barking & poopage under wraps!

- Don't stack glass or breakable near anything that may fall or get knocked over. It's hard to clean up glass out of grass!

- Don't forget to check inside items to remove any personal effects of your own.

- Don't have the tunes cranked but do have some top 40 playing which offers buyers some privacy when discussing or bartering.

- Don't hang out in a dark corner or behind the bushes, be seen and be available.

- Don't host a garage sale alone, always have at least one other person on site with you.

Smelt Fishing - Lake Simcoe 2010

To me, Smelt fishing is somewhat like waiting for Santa Claus...at the golden age of 50! There's lots of hype but it's simply not like it was when you were a kid.

The elusive Smelt fish have tickled the fancies of fishermen surrounding the great lakes for hundreds of years and around the shores of Lake Simcoe, it's no different. Once a year these scaled, slim lined beauties begin their spawning cycle within the shallows of Simcoe making them a vulnerable target to those in the want.

Smelt fish are used as bait to catch other fish but historically they are also a known delicacy, a tasty treat for the kings! Therefore, the spawning Smelts beckon not only the local racoon population but the fishermen want them too ;)

Check along the shoreline and shallows in the late to wee hours of the morning. You can spot them in their hip waders (the fishermen that is and by the way, that's not a sexy look ;), their flashlights, dip nets and buckets in hand... scoping, checking and re-checking the shorelines for nights on end. In that sense, it's worse than waiting for Santa Claus 'cause at least you have a clue when he's comin'!

For the past two weeks, late in the evening to early morning, my hopeful hubby sets out on his search. He faithfully, year in and year out, beats a path to his childhood hot spots. While the Smelt, well, they're nowhere to be found!

This evening may be the same scenario, but perhaps not? I'll keep you posted!

All Fish Seafood Recipes has oodles of recipe options for cooking up the Smelts, if you catch em' that is! I personally have never tried them, nor do I want to, so that means all the more for you. Although, I did read a rumour that the reason there are no Smelt fish left, is because Darryl Choronzey ate them all ;) ...shore lunch!!

The record breaking temperature we've been experiencing most certainly pulls people outdoors for both pleasure and yardwork. When one remains outdoors for any extended lengths they tend to visualize the upcoming season and what it will entail. Power outage in Ramara last night. Were you affected?

Last night there was a power outage that left over 6000 homes in cottage country without electricity, including mine. It occured around dinner time and continued til into the wee hours of the morning. Due to being 'plugged in' all the time this was noticed immediately!

When the power went out it was like the world just went quiet. You could hear every sound that went by unnoticed minutes before. Time seemed to stand still as I gathered my thoughts on what to do next? Both my business and personal life involve electricity, unless I'm on a camping trip. Looking around last night, I clearly wasn't camping.

Within a half hour of having no electricity I noticed people of all ages started buzzing around outside. There were kids on bikes, folks doing yard work, families going on walks together. How interesting that it takes a power outage for people to realize there's a whole other world outside. A world that for me I seem to see less and less of the more I stay 'plugged in'. Is your life the same?

To whom it may concern, thanks for the gentle reminder! The lesson from the Blackout in 2003! had been overlooked. I guess I just love being able to turn on or off whatever I choose and not being able to was a reminder to...

- buy more candles (and not those crappy ones from the dollar stores, they suck).
- find the battery powered lantern that's around here somewhere.
- have dry snacks, bottled water on hand and don't open the fridge unless you have to.
- have a non-cordless phone plugged in at all times. The cordless phone base runs on power!
- put the Province wide emergency phone # to Hydro One on my fridge 1-800-434-1235
- not take power for granted, it can be taken away at anytime!

I'm not sure what caused last night's outage but hopefully it was due to technical difficulties not someone being hurt. And to Hydro One, thanks for getting the power back on just as soon as you could!

Easter Weekend 2010 in Cottage Country

Breakfast at Two Canoes Cafe - Rama, Ontario

If you'd like to enjoy one of the best all day breakfasts then go for a drive over to the Two Canoes Cafe in Rama. This restaurant is located in Rama on the First Nations Reserve, just down the road from Casino Rama!

My breakfast plate was delivered in a timely manner, loaded with exactly what I ordered and looked picture perfect, it really did! I ordered the Two Canoes Breakfast Special (as always); two eggs over-easy, crispy bacon, crispy hashbrowns, white toast and tea (all for just $5.25!). A side of hollandaise sauce and a glass of milk were extra and that was quite fine with me...Mmmm, loved it all!! Golden, delicious, hot and fresh and our servers were also fast and efficient. I've had their Eggs Benedict and it too is very yummy.

This review is based on numerous visits to the cafe, our most recent visit being yesterday. This is quite a busy little place, good job everybody!

The Littlest House in Toronto is For Sale - March 2010

The tiniest house in Toronto is for sale and it could be all yours? All 350 square feet of it! I'd imagine this sweet shack won't stay on the market long though simply due to the novelty and of course, the price. Compared to other real estate costs in Toronto, the Little House is priced far less than the average home at $179, 000 (funny enough, still costs more than our regular sized bungalow). This translates into approximately $500 per sqaure foot which is misleading because it's not high end, luxury living. Can you say Murphy Bed?

The home itself was built by well known builder Arthur Weeden back in 1912. He and his family inhabited the home, as have numerous other families over the years. And now, in 2010 after extensive renovations, it's become a picturesque little cutie that's reminiscent of cottage life only right smack in the middle of the big smoke!

BT on CityTV Toronto highlighted the Little House this morning and I just had to share it with you... If you need a place to chill, instead of taking the long commute back to cottage country, check out The Little House!

Ahhh, it's been an amazing month so far up in cottage country! Sunshine by day, after day, after day and we couldn't have asked for better weather over the spring break we just lived through. The kidlets are now back in school doing their book learnin'; can you believe that one more school year has almost bitten the dust?

Easter is right around the corner and then Summer is soon to follow. Oh, and I'm just breaking in slowly...be back soon enough with what I'm sure will be an ever so enlightening post, lol... muah!

Identify Poison Ivy in Cottage Country

The geography, climate and elevation in cottage country Ontario is the perfect breeding grounds for Poison Ivy. Yes, that's right folks Poison Ivy exists in this beautiful Canadian nook but you needn't fear the infamous 'leaves of three' and retreat indoors. It's far more important that you are become aware it's existence then take the necessary precautions. Your knowledge of local plant life in most cases is enough however if you, your children or pets tend to wander off the beaten track you need to know more.

Poison Ivy (see Wiki for indepth info) is a plant belonging to the Anacardiaceae family or the Cashew / Sumac family of flowering plants that bear fruits known as Drupes (fruits with a soft fleshy exterior and a hard pit center such as the plum and peach. In some cases, the Anacardiaceae plants produce an irritant known as Urushiol (an oily organic allergen) or Toxicodendron found in flowering plants and woody trees, shrubs and vines like Poison Oak, Poison Ivy and Poison Sumac.

Poison Ivy grows along the edges of wooded areas, roadways and pathways, on and around exposed rocks and open fields hidden amongst the tall grasses or tucked near dappled shade. It can also be found in the forest undergrowths but is not shade tolerant and does rely on sunshine to thrive. Previously rooted up, natural areas such as subdivisions and real estate developments are commonly found to have Poison Ivy.

This itchy nightmare can grow in the form of a shrub (about 4' tall), as a groundcover (4 - 10" tall) or as a climbing vine and despite it's awful side effects is only known as a noxious weed. It grows in thick, lush colonies along roadsides, pathways, in long grasses and sometimes dappled shade and sadly is extremely hearty and durable making it very difficult to get rid of.

When seeking out your next hiking trail or afternoon picnic be sure to search the area first, before trudging through what could be a Poison Ivy colony. Look down! Search for plants with leaves of three, that are almond shaped and typically redish in colour depending upon the time of year. The plant's berries (drupes) are whitish grey in colour. Poison Ivy is decidous, meaning the leaves tend to change colour throughout their lifespan. They can be redish orange in the spring, then switch to a light or dark green in the summer and back again to yellow, orange and bright red in the late summer through early fall. The leaves also have a tendency to droop.

How to Spot Poison Ivy...

Look down! There aren't many plants on or near the ground that have the following attributes.

a) have three almond shaped leaves that are usually smooth, shiney and have minimal jagged edges
b) that change colours as the season progresses (much like a Maple tree does)
c) and has foliage that looks sad (drooping down, as though it's depressed)
d) growing in groups or clusters

Symptoms of Poison Ivy...

When you've got a case of Poison Ivy you are having an allergic reaction caused by contact with Urushiol. When this agent makes contact with your skin it causes severe itching that develops into inflammed red skin along with red and/or non-coloured bumps that then morph into clear, molten blisters. You can treat the lesions with Calamine Lotion or oatmeal and baking soda baths but absolutely do not scratch the itch! If you've come in contact with Poisin Ivy, I'd suggest you visit the doctor with anything beyond a slight case.

If you think you've come in contact with Poison Ivy you need to immediately cleanse the exposed area/s with rubbing alcohol, rinse thoroughly with water then have a warm shower with both soap and water (using soap immediately can spread oils around on the skin, use alcohol first). Oils could cause irritation within 10 minutes of contact and it will also remain on your clothing and your pets. Once you are cleaned up, put gloves on and wipe down everything else that has come in contact such as shoes, socks, pants, tools etc. Keep in mind that the rash itself isn't contagious, it's the oils that have been transferred from the leaves that causes the rash. The symptoms of Poison Ivy can last anywhere from 1 - 4 weeks or longer depending upon the severity, in some cases hospitilization is necessary.

- Do not burn clusters of Poison Ivy in an attempt to rid the area. If the smoke in inhaled into the lungs a rash could appear on the inner lining of your lungs which is extrememly painful and potentially deadly.

- Do not eat Poison Ivy for any reason, it can damage your entire digestive tract, airway, kidneys and other organs used to digest.

Personally...

I've had two, non severe cases of Poison Ivy which luckily stayed contained to my hands and of course occured 'accidently' ;) while collecting rocks for my gardens (and yes, ooops I also knew what it looked like). My symptoms were just a few tiny, raised yet partially clear bumps on my skin that went totally unnoticed by me. It was my spouse who spotted them and alerted me as to what he thought it was. Considering he's an avid bushman, I took his word for it and popped a couple of allergy pills as he suggested. The bumps never did itch nor break open, they just vanished. Two other people that I know, one a local man and the other a visitor, both had extreme cases of Poison Ivy. And yes, they too were aware of it's existence in the area. Sadly though, these two souls both sat in Poison Ivy while relieving themselves in the great outdoors. I understand that sometimes you just gotta go, but watch where you're stooping! That has got to be the utmost of cruel places to be adorned with Poison Ivy!! Both of these gentlemen visited the doctor and the hospital regularily for the next month and were extremely uncomfortable the entire time. Well, you'd think one would learn after a lesson such as that but our local boy just had stumble across it again and you guessed, de ja vu!! OMG once, but twice geez as a female, I'm sooo so lucky... and that's all I can say about that!

Keep these 'old' sayings in mind when venturing outdoors...

- Leaves of three, let it be.

- Hairy vine, no friend of mine.

- Raggy rope, don't be a dope! (the climber's)

- One, two, three? Don't touch me.

- Berries white, run in fright!

- Longer middle stem, stay away from them.

- Red leaflets in the spring, it's a dangerous thing.

Whenever you spend time living life, it's always best to be prepared for accidents. Wether on a road trip, at the cottage or just playing at home having a first aid kit that contains a minimal amount of medicinal goodies for minor injuries, scratches, scrapes and in this case rashes, is imperative.

How to Make your own Maple Syrup - DIY

Waking up to the smell of fresh made pancakes and waffles is a traditional Canadian breakfast delight...but the sweetest part of all is the natural, golden topping known as Maple Syrup that you pour over top! For most folks that means cranking the top off a bottle of Aunt Jemima but if you have a Maple Tree on your property you could actually make your own Maple Syrup from scratch.

In Ontario there are seven different species of both hard and soft Maple tree's. The hard maples, such as Sugar Maple and Black Maple measuring at least 10 " in diameter, are the preferred trees of choice for tapping. They are both plentiful and yeild the most syrup. If those species are unavailable then you can tap both Red and Silver Maples as well. Vist Wiki for a historic rendition of how the Aboriginal peoples of eastern Canada discovered this delicacy.

Sugar Maple's are generally found on moderate to well drained soil and tend to have the brightest of colors in the fall. The leaves have five distinct lobes with a very smooth underside and are abundant in Ontario's cottage country. Take a peak out your window, do you have a Maple tree in your yard?

When to tap your Maple Trees...

The natural flow of sap within the tree is climate related and can occur as early as February given the right conditions. In the spring the cold nights and warmer days creates pressure within the tree and sap begins to move inside the trunk and branches. When the tree is tapped with a sharp object the hole acts like a wound and sap begins to seep. Under the right conditions one Maple tree can yield up to 80 gallons or as little as 5 gallons (5 gallons is equal to 20 litres). It takes approximately 10 gallons of sap to produce 4 cups of Maple Syrup. Hence the cost of liguid gold!

How to tap your Maple Trees...

The commercial Sugar Bush is an intricate maze of tubes meandering through the forest floor leading back to a huge main vat of sap. At home however, the process needn't be nearly so complicated. In fact when you think back to the days of old when the First Nations peoples first founded Maple sugar their tools of the trade were purely manmade.

Nowadays, I'd suggest using a drill and drill bit measuring 7/16" in diameter bore in at about 3 1/2 - 4 1/2" feet high. Drill your hole on the sunniest side of the tree about 2"- 3" deep on a slight upward angle which will encourage the flow of sap downwards. Place the tapping spout (Spile) against the tree and tap it securely into the hole with a hammer.

Use any container to collect your sap such as rigged up milk jugs to plastic pails with metal handles. Simply hang the buckets from the spout itself and remember to cover the pail to protect it from rain and debry. The process of collecting sap takes approximately 4 - 6 weeks to gather a substantial amount due to it dripping out of the tree one drop at a time. Store the sap daily in a cold, dry location until you have enough to get started boiling it down overtop of the heat. Maple Tapping - 4 Spiles and Hooks with Step-by-Step Instructions.

The cooking process...

Once you've collected enough sap I absolutely recommend completing the cooking process outdoors in a 'sugar shack' or over an open fire, definetly not in the house. Depending upon how much sap you have this process can take from hours to days to complete so be sure to allow yourself enough time. Use a shallow pot or vessel remembering not to overfill. Sugar does bubble and it also burns easily so keep watch. If you have friends and family involved that's all the better. You know they'll be at the dinner table when it's pancake time so put 'em to work in any of the above stages, at least on this last watch even if they are there for nothing more than company.

Strain the clear sap through cheeseclothe before applying it to the heat. As the sap boils down and evaporates keep adding more sap to the pot. Skim the surface occassionally and keep the level a safe distance from the top of your shallow pot so it doesn't spill while boiling. The process is complete when the water has evaporated from the sap leaving a rich, golden colored syrup behind. At this point the temperature ought to be 7.1 degrees above the boiling point of water (use a candy thermometer as temperature does vary based on elevation). Strain the syrup a second time to filter out any crystalized sugar. Pour into sterilized bottles before it cools for sterilization purposes. Once opened be sure to refrigerate.

Once you've concentrated the sap into syrup you can make some delicious Maple Sugar treats such as fudge, cookies, cakes or if you'd rather just eat em' then there's always premade Maple Shortbread Cookies and Hard Maple Candies in the shape of a Maple Leaf to tempt your palette.

'Operation Maple Syrup'...

As a family, we set out to tap two of the large Maples on our property. Without reading up on anything beforehand, we really had no idea how long the process would take. After weeks of collecting sap in plastic pails and transferring over to larger ones for storage, we finally had enough to boil it down.

We would have had more however, my hubby drank a few litres of collected raw sap saying it gave him energy. The raw filtered sap looks like water so I too tried it...well it's not really like water and I have no problem waiting for the gold!

A sunny spring weekend came so we all headed outside, and built a fire along with a rack to steady our cooking vessel. Rather than ruining a household pot we used a shallow stainless steel drawer that was being used as a toolbox. We began early on a Saturday morning and weren't finished until Sunday evening. Overnight we just covered and let sit, ideally you'd cook right thru but in most uncommercial scenarios, it ain't happening!

Our mission I consider as a success and resulted in about 3 cups of pure Maple Syrup. Sunday evening we devoured stacks of pancakes drizzled repeatedly with our own homemade syrup! Mmmm, it really was delicious.

While exploring the trails of Copeland Forest keep your eyes open for wildlife such as White Tailed Deer, Ruffed Grouse and Wild Turkey. In early fall the Chinook Salmon are running in the Coldwater River which makes for fantastic viewing as many of the Salmon are swimming in just inches of water. Geocaching has become very popular for treasure hunt enthusiasts throughout cottage coutry, with Copeland Forest being one of the mapped hot spots. Horse enthusiasts and pets (on a leash) are welcome while motorized vehicles are not which simply enhances this tranquil setting even more.

How to Get to the Copeland Forest - If you visiting from Barrie you can reach the Copeland Forest from Highway 400, north of Barrie by taking Exit 121 and turning east onto Highway 93 towards Craighurst.

If you have any questions, call the MNR before heading out into Copeland Forest. There are reported Bear sightings in the area at times, so if you have concerns call the MNR. Please do not litter or feed the animals and pay attention to your surroundings at all times. Pack a compass, map, flashlight etc. and wear appropriate attire. Safety should always be a factor when going out of doors and into the wilderness. Hunting is a recreational sport within Ontario in general so regardless of what trail or wilderness area you may be in, take extra precautions during hunting season. Wear bright colours, not your fur coat and antlers!

Pond Hockey Championship 2010 - Huntsville, Ontario

Get off the couch and get ready for the world's largest outdoor pond hockey tournament that spans over 6 acres of Mother Nature's natural ice! Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville, Ontario will once again host the 5th annual Canadian National Pond Hockey Championships featuring both male and female hockey players from Everywhere, North America.

Entertain yourselves this winter on back to back weekends,

come to Sunset Bay for a visit or a stay!

January 29 - 31, 2010 - Men's Open Championships (age 25+, 80 teams) Women's Open Championships (age 19+, 24 teams) , and Men's Recreational Division (age 25+, 40 teams).

February 5 - 7, 2010 - Masters Championships (men's, age 35+, 72 teams); Masters Recreational (men's, age 35+, 40 teams), Women's Recreational (age 25+, 18-24 teams) and NEW Women's Masters (age 35+, 6-12 teams).

This is a recreational event folks, so there will be a rink side beer tent for those thirsty (of age) diehard hockey players and fans! There will also be refreshments, the resort and other facilities nearby including Huntsville. Remember, it's freakin' cold outside so dress appropriately and bring a change of clothes. Safe ice is an all too important factor so weather conditions do play a role in this event. If you are unsure or have any questions, call ahead to the Deerhurst Resort (phone # 705-789-6411) before you leave home.

Your participation in the event is appreciated, in any form! This pond hockey tournament is a fantastic economic boost for the Huntsville area along with being a fund raising source for worthy causes such as Shoot For a Cure, NHL Alumni Hockey's Greatest Family Fund and the Walter & Wayne Gretzky CNIB Blind Youth Scholarship Program. Mr. Walter Gretzky, named Honorary Coach of The Canadian National Pond Hockey Championship, also known as a super awesome hockey Dad, will make an appearance over the course of the event as well.

Snowmobile Trails

Another snowmobile season is upon us, so it's time to get outside and begin enjoying snow covered landscapes and over 40,000 km's of groomed trails throughout the province of Ontario.

Central Ontario has a reputation with outdoor enthusiasts even out in the middle of the wild country. The local chapter of the OFSC (Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs) provides over 5,500 km of snowmobile trails in this area beginning just north of the GTA (Greater Toronto Area).

Note: Muskoka trails are open (thank you everyone for your co-operation).

Remember to...

- Get a permit to ride the trail, they are mandatory. Be sure to have it on your person. Permits and navigational maps are available at OFSC member clubs or can be purchased online.

- Check the trail conditions. They do vary from region to region, day to day, mile to mile depending on many factors including weather. Be sure to check out the latest status report for your specific area. Central Ontario's snowmobiling district.

- Give your snowmobile the once over by checking the oil and fuel then fill up on both, if necessary. Check your signals, lights, electrical components and gauges. No missing bolts, track is good?

- Both operators and passengers willingly use the trails at their own risk, think safety at all times! Where is your helmut?

- You must know and obey all of the laws including, The Occupiers' Liability Act, The Motorized Snow Vehicles Act and the Trespass to Property Act. As well operators and passengers must know and adhere to the principles published as the Safe Riders Pledge by the International Snowmobile Manufacturers' Association.

- The OFSC is a volunteer based organization with limited resources. It is not feasible to maintain all trails in a uniform manner, remove all potential hazards or pre-alert to all dangers. Think smart, drive and ride safely.

- There is a zero tolerance approach with alchohol. All operators and passengers must not consume alcohol prior to or while using the trails (or anywhere for that matter).

- Share the trails, they are not just yours! Operators stay to the right, act responsibly and drive with care and control all the times.

- Speed limit on trails is 50 km/h or less when reduced by the law or the trail's condition.

- Grooming and maintenance activities are done 24/7, day or night. Always watch for equipment which may take up a large portion of the trail. Pay attention at all times.

- Emergency services and cell phone connections may not be available. Be sure to have an plan in place for when you shall return, contact or connect with those at home.

- Signage on trails is only for assistance and convenience and is not put their by law. Just because there is no sign to warm danger, no trespassing etc. just be careful, think smart and know you are not above the law.

- Know, understand and watch for signs of danger before and during an ice crossing. Always check first!! Weather conditins have an affect, always check!

- Dress appropriately for all weather conditions along with night and day gear that is visible in those conditions. Use reflective tapes on clothing and sled and have basic emergency equipment such as a rope, knive, matches, axe, snacks etc.

- Everything about the trail system is operated by volunteers so please respect that. To learn more and/or volunteer visit here.

Always Watch for...

- Obstacles hidden by the snow, trees and branches on or hanging over the trail
- Grooming equipment, oncoming sleds, other trail users such as skiers and walkers
- Wildlife
- Washed out trails
- Snow banks, drifts and moguls
- Road and railway crossings
- Streets, roads, intersections, corners and stop signs
- Bridges, open water, pressure cracks in the ice, broken ice

...Be Safe, Have Fun and remember this is a Family Oriented sport. Be extra careful around the little ones who are unpredictable, get cold really easy and will look to your for guidance if the time arises so think smart at all times and stay off the booze!

Land those Lake Simcoe Perch!

If you've got the talent, skill and a horseshoe tucked somewhere just right, then you too may be able to land those delicious Lake Simcoe Perch.

Your chances will increase if you do a bit of research first, before heading out on the lake. Preplanning and actually doing what is in the plan will make your life easier. Realizing you forgot to hit up the bait shop really blows when you are already at the hut. Hang around here and see how the locals fish Lake Simcoe, oh but not the exact where's my friend, that's gonna cost ya!

Yesterday, January 15th 2010 was a beautiful day on Lake Simcoe with temperatures around +1C. For this time of year, that's a huge wow compared to two weeks ago at -20C. There was very little wind with sunshine breaking thru otherwise pretty much overcast all day long. The fishing began at around 11am with a trip out in the Argo (a land/watercraft, in one) and continued until about 5pm ish when it was time to head for shore. The majority of Perch were landed from mid-late afternoon.

Bait - live minnows, Emerald Shiners
Line - single hook with a Split Shot Sinker attached to an old wooden fishing stick
Caught - 12 Perch (allowed 50); Smallest 7" throw back to the Largest 14.5" 1.75lbs & yummy!

Ice Fishing, Think Safety First!

Central Ontario, mainly the Lake Simcoe area, is fast becoming one of the world's hottest spots for entertaining one of the most coldest of sports, ice fishing!

The frozen waters of Central Ontario will beckon fisherman from afar as the bone chilling, sub-freezing temperatures begin to freeze both the land and water. Forming a temporary, seasonal splendor, an ice fishing heaven. As all good fisherman know, if your lucky and have what it takes, you too can have a chance to catch and taste what generations of local fisherman and visitors rave about!

You will need a Fishing License to legally fish any waters, in any season, unless otherwise specified. Please see the Ministry of Natural Resources, or your local tackle and bait shop for more information. Safety is just as imperative and must include proper clothing, protection from the elements, compass, communication, wather and ice thickness.

Ice Safety

Less than 4 inches – STAY OFF! There is no reason to test the newly formed ice at this time.

4-6 Inches – Ice fishing, foot travel in single-file lines, and small spaced seating on the ice should be safe, presuming the ice is clear and clean.

6-10 Inches – Snowmobiles and ATV’s can travel safely on good ice that is over inches thick.

10-16 Inches – Small cars and pick-ups can begin to venture on to the ice. However, it is best to avoid driving on the ice, whenever possible.

16+ Inches – A medium-sized car or mid-size pickup can drive on good clear solid ice.

Remember that many factors such as wind, rain and temperatures increasing can change safe ice to unsafe ice overnight! Always check beforehand! Proceed with caution, if at all, across pressure cracks. Have a communication device with you and prepare those at home with your arrival time at home. As well have a GPS, compass or mapping system in place and a BUDDY system. Do not venture out alone!

Ice will not form safely in areas with swift currents which leaves open areas that freeze thinner. Off-shore winds can shift the ice forming pressure cracks, like the one pictured above. The late winter warm spells can also destroy the texture of the ice, forming rotten or soft ice. Beware that it may be the required thickness but will not adequately support weight. Smart fisherman carry a self-rescue device made of two spiked handles connected by a string used to pull themselves out of the water and onto the ice. Many cars, trucks, SUVs, snowmobiles, and fish houses also fall through the ice each year. Current environmental regulations require the speedy recovery of the vehicle or structure. In some cases divers must be hired, and when the trouble occurs far from shore, helicopters may be employed for hoisting and or search and rescue. Other risks associated with ice fishing include carbon monoxide poisoning from fish house heaters and frostbite due to prolonged exposure to wind and low temperatures. Make sure you have room inside your hut for all of those in your party, including pets.

Safety Tips & Hints

- Wear Layers of Clothing. Layering makes it easier to remove or put clothes back on if you are getting too hot or too cold. Your initial layer should be thermal underwear that draws away moisture.Your next layer should be insulating like fleece, wool or flannel . Your last or outside layer should be windproof and waterproof, your jacket should be a down-filled coat with a hood. Remember to wear a warm wool, fleece or knitted hat. Avoid cotton because it does not hold heat well, especially when wet. Boots should be insulated & waterproof, wear liner socks plus a pair of thick wool or non-cotton socks. Wear your boots loosely fitting to avoid cutting off circulation of blood to your lower extremities. Make sure to wear neoprene or waterproof nylon mittens.

- What else should I bring? A small bag of sand or kitty litter to sprinkle around your ice hole or vehicle, for better traction. An additional set of dry clothes and socks in case you get wet. High energy snacks and warm drinks to fuel you through the cold day. Rope to use in case someone falls through the ice. First aid kit. Matches stored in a waterproof container (35mm film canisters work great). Home-made ice awls or store bought ice picks, in an easy to reach OUTER pocket. PFD seat cushion to use as a seat and/or flotation device. Hand and foot warmers.

- Pay attention & watch where you are going!

- Never fish in an area where the ice is less than 4 inches thick.

- Avoid areas where there are feeder streams and springs, all running water.

- Stay away from ice areas that are dark, honeycombed, porous, wet, soft or slushy.

Falling Through the Ice

If you fall through the ice, don't panic. You must remain calm.

- Use your ice awls to pull yourself up onto the safe ice.

No ice awls? Try "swimming out," which lets your body rise and allows you to get onto firm ice.

- Use your legs to kick behind you, to help keep from going under.

Once on the ice, remain low and distibute your body weight over as much of the ice surface area as possible. Spread out.

If you can't get to safety, you must call for help. Yell as loud as you can.

- Slip your boots off to make treading water easier.

- Keep your clothes on, as they will insulate you from the icy water.

When is Enough Cold, Enough?

If you, your chidren or your pets are either wet, tired, cold or all three it's probably time to head home! In the meantime, change into dry clothes and seek out warmth in all forms.

Keep an eye out for frostbite (pale skin on exposed flesh) which can happen within minutes in extreme winter conditions. Seek medical assistance asap.

Watch out for signs of hypothermia (shivering, loss of judgment). Treat it with warm fluids, dry clothes, a blanket and warm shelter. Seek medical assistance asap.
